Angel Mateo Canavery (Buenos Aires, 21 September 1850 – 20 July 1916) was a Lieutenant Colonel of the Argentine Army during the Conquest of the Desert campaign.

Biography

Angel Mateo Canavery was born 21 September 1850 in Buenos Aires. Born into a military family, his brother was Colonel Tomás Canavery, a hero of the Battle of Valentinas Lomas during the Paraguayan War. His sister, María Juana Canavery was mother of General Enrique Mosconi. He was married to Mercedes Montero, maternal granddaughter of José Rondeau.

Angel Canavery, was descended from a traditional family of Buenos Aires. was the great-grandson of Juan Antonio Domingo Jugluns de Canaverys, member of the Court of Auditors of Buenos Aires during the Viceroyalty of Rio de la Plata.

Military

Canavery began his career in the army, fighting in 1873 against the army of Ricardo López Jordán. In 1880 with the rank of first lieutenant, he served under General Julio Argentino Roca during the Conquest of the Desert. Canavery had been honored by the same chief Catriel with a poncho, in recognition of its value during the military expeditions. During the revolutions of 1880 and 1890, he remained loyal to the governing elite. In his military career had various destinations: Salta, Córdoba, San Luis, and in 1889 as a military attache to Italy.

Angel Mateo Canavery retired from the army with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He died a 20 July 1916.
