The Spartans, led by 10th year head coach Tom Izzo, played their home games at the Breslin Center and were members of the Big Ten Conference. MSU finished the season with a record 25–7, 13–3 to finish in second place in the Big Ten. They received a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the 8th consecutive year and advanced to the Final Four before losing to eventual National Champion North Carolina.

Previous Season

The Spartans finished the 2003–04 season with an overall record of 18–12 and in third place in the Big Ten with a 12–4 record. Michigan State received a #7 seed in the NCAA Tournament, their 7th straight trip to the Tournament, and lost in the First Round.

Season Summary

The Spartans were led by senior Alan Anderson (13.2 PPG, 5.6 RPG, 1.7 APG), juniors Maurice Ager (14.1 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 1.8 APG) and Paul Davis (12.3 PPG, 8.0 RPG, 1.6 APG), and sophomore Shannon Brown (10.9 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 1.7 APG). They began the season ranked #13 in the country. The Spartans struggled early in the non-conference schedule, beginning 3–2 with losses to #10 Duke in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge[2] and George Washington in the BB&T Classic.[2] MSU won their remaining non-conference games to finish the non-conference schedule with a record of 8–2 and ranked #20 in the country.

The Spartans cruised through the Big Ten, only losing 3 games, including a loss to #1 Illinois[3] and finished second in conference to Illinois. MSU finished the regular season with a 13–3 conference record and 22–5 overall while being ranked #13 in the country. The Spartans lost in the quarterfinals in the Big Ten Tournament to Iowa.[4]

Michigan State earned a #5 seed in the NCAA Tournament, their 8th straight appearance under Tom Izzo. After having exited in the First Round the prior year, the Spartans beat Old Dominion[5] and Vermont to advance to the Sweet Sixteen for the 6th time in 8 years.[6] In the Sweet Sixteen, the Spartans beat #3 Duke to advance to the Elite Eight, Izzo's first win over Duke's Mike Krzyzewski.[7] With a heart-stopping win over #7 Kentucky in double overtime, the Spartans advanced to their fourth Final Four in seven seasons.[8][9] However, the Spartans fell to eventual National Champions, #2 North Carolina, in the Final Four.[10][11]
