The 2020 Aegean Sea earthquake was a magnitude 7.0 earthquake which struck on Friday, 30 October 2020, about 14 km (8.7 mi) northeast of the island of Samos, Greece.[3][4] In Samos, buildings were damaged and the Church of the Virgin Mary in Karlovasi partially collapsed.[5] Numerous buildings were reported to collapse in Bayraklı and Bornova, İzmir.[6] Posts on social media showed people walking through rubble of collapsed buildings.[7][8]

Earthquake

The earthquake occurred as a result of normal faulting at a shallow crustal depth within the Eurasia tectonic plate in the eastern Aegean Sea, about 250 km north of the closest main plate boundary, where the Africa plate moves to the north at a rate of approximately 10 mm/yr with respect to Eurasia.[3] Therefore, this earthquake is considered an intraplate event due to its location.

Tsunami

Multiple social media posts showed water rushing through streets and ports in the region following the earthquake, along with tsunami warnings being issued for the islands of Ikaria, Kos, Chios and Samos.[9] Seferihisar is among the places hit by the tsunami.[10][11]

Damage

Initially, Turkey's Minister of the Interior Suleyman Soylu stated that at least six buildings were destroyed in Izmir, but the city's mayor Tunç Soyer put the number of destroyed buildings closer to 20.[12] the president of Samos Hospital, Nikos Stefanis, stated that although buildings were damageg across the island, the worst sustained was in Karlovasi,[13] where a large church in Samos was partially collapsed.[14]

Casualties

As of 30 October, 12 people died and 419 more were injured in Turkey,[2][15] while in Greece, 2 people died[16] and 10 more were injured so far.[17][18]

Relief operations

Right after the earthquake, Turkish Minister of Health Fahrettin Koca stated that about 40 ambulances, 35 emergency rescue teams and two ambulance helicopters had reached the scene,[19] while Turkey's Ministry of National Defence stated that one of its planes had departed from Etimesgut Air Base to transport AFAD and gendarmerie teams to the region.[20] Also, the Turkish Red Crescent immediately deployed teams from six cities to provide food to those affected by the earthquake.[21]

International reactions

Azerbaijan,[22] France,[23] and Israel[24] offered their support to the affected countries.
