Abaddon's Gate is a science fiction novel by James S. A. Corey (pen name of Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck). It is about a conflict in the solar system that involves Earth, Mars, and the Asteroid Belt (colonies of people living on asteroids, referred to as "Belters"). It is the third title of The Expanse series and is preceded by Leviathan Wakes and Caliban's War. The series is continued in Cibola Burn. The book was released on 4 June 2013,[1] as well released as an audiobook by Audible, narrated by Jefferson Mays.[2]

Synopsis

For generations, the solar system – Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt – was humanity's great frontier. Until now. The protomolecule (an extraterrestrial infectious agent discovered on the moon Phoebe) spent a little more than a year preparing its program under the clouds of Venus. Now it has launched a massive complex of structures that assembled themselves into a massive, thousand-kilometer-wide gate that parked 2 AU outside of Uranus's orbit, leading to a starless space beyond.

Jim Holden and the crew of the Rocinante are part of a vast flotilla of scientific and military ships from the UN, Mars, and the Outer Planets Alliance, going out to examine the gate. Behind the scenes, a complex plot is set in to motion, with the destruction of Holden at its core. As the emissaries of the human race try to find out whether the gate is an opportunity or a threat, the greatest danger is the one they brought with them.

Reception

Abbadon's Gate won the 2014 Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel.[3] Publishers Weekly gave Abaddon's Gate a starred review saying "series fans will find this installment the best yet.".[4]
