Alan Keir Bowman, FBA (born 23 May 1944),[1] is a British classicist and academic. He is a former Principal of Brasenose College, Oxford.[2]
Early life
Bowman was born on 23 May 1944 in Manchester, United Kingdom.[1] He was educated at Manchester Grammar School, The Queen's College, Oxford and the University of Toronto.[1]
Academic career
After holding academic positions at Rutgers University and Manchester University he was elected as University Lecturer in Ancient History at Oxford University and Official Student of Christ Church, Oxford. He was Senior Censor at Christ Church from 1988 to 1990.[1]
In 1995 Bowman became founding Director of the Centre for the Study of Ancient Documents at Oxford.[1][3] In 2002 he became Camden Professor of Ancient History and Fellow of Brasenose College.[4]
