Educated at Sheffield University, and gaining his PhD from that university in 1987, Winton trained for ministry at Lincoln Theological College and was ordained a deacon in 1991.[4] His first post was as a Curate in Southgate, in the Diocese of London.[7][8] Later he was Priest in charge of St Paul's Walden, then CME Officer for the St Albans Diocese. Finally (before his elevation to the Episcopate) he was Rector of Welwyn;[9] during the latter part of that appointment, from 2007 til 2009, he was also an honorary canon of St Albans Abbey.[4]
