Alexander Robert "Alex" Hirsch[1] (born June 18, 1985) is an American animator, storyboard artist, voice actor, and television producer. He is best known as the creator of the Disney XD animated television series Gravity Falls, where he voices some of the characters. He has previously worked as a storyboard artist on the Cartoon Network series The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack and the Disney Channel series Fish Hooks.

Career

Hirsch is most known for creating the series Gravity Falls for the Disney Channel. He provides the voice of Grunkle Stan, Soos, Old Man McGucket and Bill Cipher, as well as many other minor characters featured throughout the show.

Hirsch first started out as a writer and storyboard artist for The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, where he worked alongside and befriended fellow animators J. G. Quintel (who would go on to create Regular Show) and Pendleton Ward (who would go on to create Adventure Time).

Hirsch later moved on to be the writer, storyboard artist and creative consultant for Fish Hooks, which he also developed for television alongside Maxwell Atoms, where he portrays Clamantha, her father, Fumble, one of the fish police and a Ferret.[2]

In 2013, Hirsch provided the voice of Officer Concord the Juice Time Juice Box Flavor Cop in the "Terrifying Tri-State Trilogy of Terror" episode of Phineas and Ferb, also on Disney Channel.[3]

In late 2015, Hirsch provided a cameo in the music video for "Dance Bitch" by Allie Goertz.[4]

On January 6, 2016, Variety revealed that Hirsch signed a development deal with Fox Broadcasting Company to make a new animated series.[5]

Personal life

Gravity Falls was inspired by Hirsch's own childhood experiences with his twin sister during their summer vacations. He places many of his real-life experiences in the show, like living in Piedmont and trick-or-treating with his sister as kids.[6] Mabel Pines, one of the lead characters of Gravity Falls, was inspired by his twin sister, Ariel Hirsch.[2] In the series Mabel gets a pet pig, just like his sister had always wanted when she was a kid.[7]

Hirsch is a graduate of Piedmont High School. In 2002, as a junior, he won the high school's annual bird-calling contest and appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman, demonstrating the call of the blue heron.[8][9]

He is dating Dana Terrace, a storyboard artist on Gravity Falls.[10]
