Amanda Tapley is an American beauty pageant titleholder from Birmingham, Alabama. She was crowned Miss Alabama in June 2008.[1] She placed in the top 15 contestants at the Miss America 2009 pageant.

Biography

Tapley is a native of Birmingham, Alabama and a graduate of Briarwood Christian School.[2] She studied classical piano for 14 years. She was first taught by her grandfather, Dr. Witold Turkiewicz, who was a Samford University music professor. She produced a charity CD along with her brother and hosted a piano concert to raise over $50,000 for pediatric diseases and for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.[3]

Tapley is a graduate of Samford University in Homewood, Alabama, and the UAB School of Medicine.[1][4][5] Her career goal is to practice emergency medicine.[6] As of June 2015, Tapley is a resident in emergency medicine at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama.[5]

Competitions

Tapley won the 2008 Miss Alabama scholarship pageant in June 2008.[7] Her local title as Miss Stamford University placed her into the Miss Alabama competition, which she won on her first try. Tapley's platform is “Music For A Cure” and her competition talent was piano, performing the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No 1.[3] Tapley was also named preliminary winner in the talent and swimsuit competitions as well as winner of the pageant's overall talent and interview competitions.[3]

In the run-up to Miss America 2009 in January 2009, Tapley was on the TLC show Countdown to the Crown. She was a "wild card" gold sash winner, making it to the finals of the preliminary competition. After a nationwide vote, she was selected as one of four "America's Choice" winners, which placed her into the top 15 at the Miss America pageant in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was also 2nd runner-up to the Miss America Quality of Life Award for community service.
