Anderson-Shiro Consolidated Independent School District (ASCISD) is a public school district based in Anderson, Texas (USA). In addition to Anderson, the district also serves the community of Shiro as well as rural areas in central Grimes County. The district operates a combined junior/senior high school, Anderson-Shiro Jr./Sr. High School, and one elementary school, Anderson-Shiro Elementary School.

History

The current ASCISD can be traced back to 1846 with the opening of the Masonic Collegiate Institute. The sponsoring Masonic Lodge opened a facility for the school in 1847 on what is the current ASCISD site. The property would pass back and forth between the Lodge and several owners until 1905, when the Lodge deeded the property to the Anderson School District No. 1, which was created by Grimes County in 1893 and had purchased part of the original property at that time.[6]

During the 1940s and 1950s several smaller districts (Independent District No. 2, Pine Grove District No. 3, Spring Grove District No. 1, Carlos, and Eureka No. 26) were consolidated into the Anderson ISD. In 1959 the northern half of the Klein Independent School District was annexed into the Anderson ISD. The district took its current name, and nearly doubled in size, in June 1970 when it consolidated with the neighboring Shiro district.[6]

Finances

As of the 2010-2011 school year, the appraised valuation of property in the district was $449,666,000.[1] The maintenance tax rate was $0.104 and the bond tax rate was $0.039 per $100 of appraised valuation.[1]

Academic achievement

In 2011, the school district was rated "recognized" by the Texas Education Agency.[5] Thirty-five percent of districts in Texas in 2011 received the same rating.[7] No state accountability ratings will be given to districts in 2012.[8] A school district in Texas can receive one of four possible rankings from the Texas Education Agency: Exemplary (the highest possible ranking), Recognized, Academically Acceptable, and Academically Unacceptable (the lowest possible ranking).
