New Charter University is a private, for-profit, accredited distance learning university headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah.

New Charter University offers Associate, bachelor's and master's degrees in business, public policy and administration, and criminal justice. The university's courses are online and self-paced, meaning students can attend school when convenient and learn according to their own pace and personal learning style. Students take exams through an online proctoring service, and the university's competency-based model means that passing a course and earning a degree is based on the student demonstrating mastery of the course material—and not by logging seat time. However, many courses involve a number of exercises and projects, in addition to the final exam, to pass the course.

Some program such as MBA may be limited to one course at a time. Students have to pass the first course in order to start the second course and so on. Some courses require passing a "pre-final" at minimum 70% or higher before unlocking final exam. Graduate courses require B or better, and undergraduate courses require C or better to get credit for the course. Students may be able to accelerate their time to completing a degree if they bring prior experience in the subject matter or demonstrate competencies more quickly. A competency-based academic model measures a set of demonstrated skills, rather than a succession of courses, to determine whether a student has gained the knowledge and abilities to be successful in today's workplace.

Accreditation and Institutional Recognition

New Charter University is nationally accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC), an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. New Charter University is also an institutional member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), the American Council on Education (ACE), the Council for Adult & Experiential Learning (CAEL) and the American Association of Collegiate Registrars & Admissions Officers.[3]

New Charter University is also recognized to be the first US based educational member to become part of Knod's global learning network.[4]

History

New Charter University was launched as Andrew Jackson University in 1994 by Robert McKim Norris, Jr., and D. Michael Barrett, both graduates of the Cumberland School of Law and colleagues at a Birmingham, Alabama law firm. The school was designed as a university catering to the needs of adult learners using the correspondence school model.

The a correspondence school business model, however, was well past its effectiveness. The school was losing money and in danger of closing when Mr. Norris ceded operational control to a new management team in June 2005. The new managers added capital and moved all courses online while initiating a marketing program to build enrollment. New management also developed, and spun off, an online proctoring service in late 2009, and put the university up for sale to concentrate on the online proctoring operation.

The school was acquired by UniversityNow, Inc. in December 2010, and Andrew Jackson University officially changed its name to "New Charter University" in early 2011. As part of the transition, the university also relocated its headquarters to San Francisco, California.[5]

In 2015, the school was acquired by Global Heritage Education. As part of the transition, the university also relocated its headquarters to Salt Lake City, Utah and changed its motto to "A University designed for you".

Academics

New Charter University offers an online associate degree completion program in Criminal Justice, Communication, and Business. The University also offers Bachelor's programs in Criminal Justice, Communication, and Business. Master's degree programs are also offered in public administration (MPA) and Business Administration (MBA). The University is in the process of launching programs in education and human sciences.[6]
