Aubrey William de Vere Beauclerk (20 February 1801 – 1 February 1854) was the son of Charles George Beauclerk and Emily Charlotte Ogilvie. A former army major, he was a Member of Parliament (MP) for East Surrey 1832 to 1837 and was a political radical, active in the reform movement.[1] He married Ida Goring on 13 February 1834. Together the couple had four children. On 7 December 1841 he married Rose Matilda Robinson. They had two children. Beauclerk has been romantically linked to the nineteenth-century writer Mary Shelley.[2] He was known to have lived at Ardglass Castle in County Down, Ireland, and St. Leonard Lodge at Horsham, West Sussex, England.

Political career

As an MP Beauclerk supported the radical causes of the day, including the abolition of slavery and the discontinuation of tithes. He believed in a small, fixed duty on corn, and sought Church reform and an end to taxes on knowledge. Beauclerk was the only person, according to a letter from Mary Shelley to Claire Clairmont, to support Mary Shelley's son Percy Florence Shelley's bid become a member of parliament.[3]
