Augustin Denys Marie Cochin (22 December 1876 – 8 July 1916) was a French historian of the French Revolution.[1] Much of his work was posthumously published in an incomplete state after he was killed in action in World War I.[2]

"Probably the most neglected historian of the French Revolution",[3] wrote François Furet, who devoted a chapter of his essay Interpreting the French Revolution to Cochin, and declared: "Tocqueville and Cochin were the the only historians to propose a rigorous conceptualization of the French Revolution."[4]

Career overview

Born in Paris, Cochin was the son of Denys Cochin, a Parisian deputy in the National Assembly with ties to the Vatican, and the grandson of Augustin Cochin, a French politician and writer.[5] His Catholic upbringing helped him to remain detached from the French Revolution and study it historically in a new light.[6]

Cochin studied the Revolution from a sociological perspective, cultivated from his interest in the work of Émile Durkheim,[7] and he sought to look at the revolution from a social perspective.[8][9] François Furet believed that Cochin’s work worked towards an analysis of two objectives: “a sociology of the production and role of democratic ideology, and a sociology of political manipulation and machines.”[10] Cochin’s work deals with the revolution itself from a conceptual basis.[11]

Cochin was drafted into service in World War I in 1914, and he was wounded four times in service before being killed on 8 July 1916 at Maricourt, Somme.[12]

The French Academy awarded him the prix Vitet in 1916 and the Grand prix Gobert in 1926.

His sometime collaborator, Charles Charpentier, worked with Cochin’s family towards a posthumous publication of his works. In 1979, the sociologist Jean Baechler re-edited his 1921 book, Les Sociétés de Pensée et la Démocratie Moderne: Études d’Histoire Révolutionnaire, because according to him "Cochin offers a coherent, deep and fruitful theory of homo ideologicus [...] and offers an effective conceptual tool to study the history that humans do without knowing it". In 2018, Denis Sureau published an almost complete collection of Augustin Cochin's works under the title La Machine Révolutionnaire, with a preface by historian Patrice Gueniffey.
