The Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) is a national, bilingual, not-for-profit, membership organization dedicated to the promotion of Canada’s international relations through international education. CBIE promotes the special interests of the international learner, both the foreign national studying in Canada and the Canadian studying abroad, through educational exchanges, scholarships, training awards and internships, technical assistance in education and other related services.

CBIE believes that international education is one of the best ways to create understanding among peoples and to develop enduring political, cultural and economic links among nations. CBIE is a unique organization in Canada. Among the major national organizations, only CBIE covers international education exclusively, spanning the spectrum of Canadian education, from K-12 to postgraduate, public and private sectors.

Services

CBIE members benefit from being part of a broad community of international education professionals across the education sector, from K-12 to postgraduate. This community in turn benefits from connecting with partners across Canada and the globe, through CBIE’s continuous relationship-building activity.

CBIE services for members and learners include educational exchanges, scholarships, training awards, internships, and technical assistance in education. CBIE is engaged in scholarship management, civil society and public sector reform, research and information services, advocacy, training programs, and professional development for international educators. CBIE supports Canadian students interested in studying abroad as well as international students coming to Canada in finding opportunities, scholarships and advice on the CBIE Student Centre

Scholarships

CBIE manages a range of awards on behalf of the Government of Canada which are offered to Canadian students studying abroad.

• The Canada-China Scholars' Exchange Program Awards are available to Canadians for study in China
• The Commonwealth Scholarship Plan Awards are available to Canadians for study in Commonwealth countries
• The Foreign Government Awards Program are available to Canadians for study in other foreign countries
• The Organization of American States (OAS) Fellowships Programs are available to Canadians for studies and research in an OAS member state
• The Organization of American States (OAS) Professional Development Scholarships Program invites Canadian institutions to offer courses
• Graduate Level Scholarships for Canadian Students to conduct research and study internationally.

CBIE manages a range of awards which are offered to foreign students studying in Canada.

• CBIE manages a range of awards in partnership with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)

The Libyan-North American Scholarship Program

• The Libyan-North American Scholarship Program is a collaboration between the Libyan Ministry of Education and Scientific Research and the Canadian Bureau for International Education, funded by the Libyan Government. It involves approximately 2,000 Libyan students who study in Canada and the United States. The goal of the Scholarship Program is to build the capacity of Libyan citizens to address the needs of Libyan public institutions, academia and Libyan society as a whole through the pursuit of graduate and post-graduate medical studies in North America.

The Libyan North-American Scholarship Program is being transferred to the Libyan cultural bureau on October 1st, 2015.

The head office of the CBIE is 220 Laurier Avenue West, Suite 1550 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Affiliations

The CBIE has worked with United Nations agencies, the World Bank, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, the Canadian International Development Agency, foreign governments, international investors and Canadian foundations and corporations.

History

Although the Canadian Bureau for International Education was incorporated in 1966, the organization developed in the late 1940s as Friendly Relations with Overseas Students (FROS). The organization was also previously named Canadian Service for Overseas Students and Trainees (CSOST).
