Castleton is a village on the River Esk, part of the civil parish of Danby in the county of North Yorkshire in England. It can be found about 15 miles south-east of Middlesbrough, in the North York Moors. There was once a medieval castle sited on Castle Hill.

It is served by Castleton Moor railway station on the Esk Valley Line. Castleton has a local school, church, chapel and two public houses, The Downe Arms and The Eskdale, as well as a small Co-op supermarket, two village shops, post office, petrol station, tea room, bank, hair salon, public toilets and an art gallery. Castleton is a centre for walking, birdwatching, shooting and many other pursuits. It is said that Castleton was named after a castle built near the River Esk. Castleton has a cricket team which plays next to the river.

Castleton is studied briefly during the GCSE course for geography, due to the nearby quarry, to the south of Castleton. It is also studied during some A-Level Geography courses because of its location and status as a declining village community. In times past Castleton was actually the main market and industrial town serving Upper Eskdale. There were annual wool, cheese and cattle fairs, cheese market and a silk mill.

Bus services through Castleton barely exist in the winter. However, on Sundays and Bank Holidays from spring to autumn, the village is served by the Moorsbus network.

The Esk Valley Walk runs through the village.
