  • The natural course of the Colorado River flows from 16 miles (26 km) north of Grand Lake, Colorado, through the Grand Canyon, into the Gulf of California. However eight reservoirs for the heavy use of the river as a water supply for cities in adjacent states and an irrigation source for the Imperial Valley, has desiccated the lower course of the river in Mexico so that it no longer consistently reaches the Colorado River Delta and Gulf of California.
