- The Colorado River flows in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico for approximately 1,450 mi (2,330 km). It drains a part of the arid regions of the western Rocky Mountains slopes, and part of eastern and southern Utah. The river also drains nearly all of the state of Arizona, very small portions of the southeastern deserts of California, and parts of southern Nevada, including Las Vegas (to Lake Mead).

- The natural course of the Colorado River flows from 16 miles (26 km) north of Grand Lake, Colorado, through the Grand Canyon, into the Gulf of California. However eight reservoirs for the heavy use of the river as a water supply for cities in adjacent states and an irrigation source for the Imperial Valley, has desiccated the lower course of the river in Mexico so that it no longer consistently reaches the Colorado River Delta and Gulf of California.
