The motor neurone diseases are a group of progressive neurological disorders that destroy motor neurons, the cells that control voluntary muscle activity such as speaking, walking, breathing and swallowing. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) (sometimes called Lou Gehrig's disease), progressive muscular atrophy (PMA), spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), progressive bulbar palsy (PMP), and primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) are all forms of motor neuron disease. There is no known cure.
