The Center for China and Globalization (CCG) is an independent, non-profit think tank based in Beijing. CCG conducts research in a range of social science areas including world affairs, international talent issues, sustainable development, entrepreneurship and globalization.
Founded by a number of returned scholars from the west together with the Policy Advisory Committee of the China Western Returned Scholars Association (WRSA), CCG aims to utilise its ‘pool of first-class scholars, business leaders and experts in government, (to) address issues on how best to position China in a globalized world’.
The organisation’s Director-General is Wang Huiyao, who is also the founding director of South China Global Talent Institute and a leading Chinese academic on business and development. The other directors are Gao Zhikai, Tang Min, Tao Qinghua, Tian Suning and Xue Lan.
Research
CCG specialises in research pertaining to Chinese development in relation to globalization. Within this there is a focus on topics such as the global movement of talent and the development of entrepreneurship and enterprise. CCG has played a prominent role in shaping the debate on talent within China and collaborated with the national government for a long-term research study on this topic in 2008.
Publications
CCG publications include the monthly journals, China and Globalization Research, Policy Advisory Report and also the CCG Newsletter. CCG also issues reports of its major conferences and main activities. Articles also frequently appear in leading national and international magazines and newspapers such as the Financial Times and China Daily.[1] Whilst many of the experts take part in television and radio programs and publish books on relevant research areas.
Reports
Report on International Talents Strategy
In June 2008, CCG participated in a long-term national talent planning research study in collaboration with the Chinese Ministry of Organization. CCG's specific area of focus was in International Talent Strategy and the center published a comprehensive report of their findings. The report analyzed China's situation in terms of competing for international talent, and included research on recent accomplishments, potentially sustainable competitive advantages and also existing problems. From this research it was possible to submit a series of policy-making recommendations.
Report on the “Chinese Green Card” and Visa Issue
On 3 September 2009, CCG experts were invited by the State Council Overseas Chinese Office to take part in the “Chinese Green Card and Visa Issue Roundtable”. Wang Huiyao, Director General of Center for China & Globalization delivered a report on this issue that offers advice and suggestions for improving the global movements of talent.
Annual Report on Chinese Talent Educated Abroad 2009
The Annual Report on Chinese Talent Educated Abroad covers 60 years of Chinese talent educated overseas and is a ground-breaking volume that contains contributions from top experts in China and abroad.
Books
CCG also publishes many books on its research and other findings. Currently over a dozen books have already been published.
Contemporary Chinese Returnees
The Contemporary Chinese Returnees series contains 8 books and is the most comprehensive and largest research series of returned Chinese scholars. Books in this series include Reflections of 100 Chinese Returnees, Move on Wall Street and Contemporary Chinese Returnees.
Talent War
Talent War is the result of many years of research work by Wang Huiyao. This book investigates a global war that has been fought for over 60 years for international talent. While this war does not involve bullets or soldiers, it has an unimaginable impact on the development of a nation. Wang Huiyao contends that a country's ability to develop and then retain its talent, will determine its future in the 21st century. This book presents an eye-opening depiction of the global talent landscape that is of true significance to all nations around the world.
Dreams from My Father: a Story of Race and Inheritance
Dreams from My Father is a memoir by the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama. It was first published in 1995 after Obama was elected the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review, before his political career began. The CCG translated this book into Chinese and since then this copy of Obama's autobiography has sold over 250,000 copies in China.
Events
CCG hosts events in a range of sizes so as to allow meaningful debate on the issues most affecting China. Events include regular round-table and panel discussions with large-scale conferences also being held in major cities across China. These events act as a melting-pot for insight and discussion, allowing leading thinkers from business, academia and government to engage with each other.
