Charles Ambroise Bertrand L'Hodiesnière (25 May 1756 – 30 May 1819) was a French deputy to the National Convention and to the Council of Five Hundred.

Biography

King's prosecutor in Falaise before the Revolution, Bertrand became administrator of Calvados. On September 6, 1792, he was elected deputy of the Convention for the department of Orne.

During the trial of Louis XVI, he voted for the King's conviction, for the ratification of the judgment, for the death penalty and against the reprieve. Nicknamed "Bertrand-Calvados", most of his speeches were about tax issues, of which he was a specialist.

On April 13, 1793, he voted for the impeachment of Marat; on May 21, he became a member of the Commission of Twelve, for the investigation of the plots of the Paris Commune, and, on May 28, he abstained in the vote on the report of the decree which had broken the Commission of Twelve the day before. On June 2, 1793, he was decreed arrested, and on July 8, on the report of Saint-Just, in the name of the Committee of Public Safety, he was recalled to the assembly. On July 29, he resigned and was replaced on August 29 by his substitute Desrivières.

Commissioner of the Directory in Calvados, this department elected him to the Council of Five Hundred, on 25 germinal year VI, where he attacked and contributed, on 30 prairial, to overthrow the triumvirate Merlin, Treilhard and La Revellère. He defended the election of Sieyès, fought the Jacobins and was one of the promoters of the Coup of 18 Fructidor.

During the Coup of 18 Brumaire, he sat in the tribune and strongly opposed Bonaparte by shouting: "Death to the tyrant". He fled by jumping out of one of the windows, was excluded from the assembly, and returned to private life. The law of January 12, 1816 against the regicides obliged him to withdraw temporarily in Brussels.

He ended his days in his property of Hamel St Etienne.
