Citavi is a reference management program for Microsoft Windows published by Swiss Academic Software in Wädenswil, Switzerland. Citavi is widely used in Germany,[1] with site licenses at most German universities,[2] many of which offer training sessions and settings files for Citavi.[1]

Versions

Citavi began as a reference management program called LiteRat, developed at the Heinrich Heine University in 1995, and considered version 1.0. The first version to bear the Citavi name was released as Citavi 2.[3] Version 3 was released in November 2010 and was the first version with a user interface in English.[4] Since version 4, released in April 2013, it is possible to switch between English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, and Spanish.[5] Citavi 5 was released in April 2015.

Citavi 5 is offered in three editions:[6]

  • Citavi Free (no cost, limited to 100 references per project)
  • Citavi for Windows (commercial, unlimited projects, concurrent access to database for up to three people at the same time if saved on a Windows network drive)
  • Citavi for DBServer (commercial, unlimited projects, database in MS SQL Server in Intranet, or in a private cloud on Windows Azure, concurrent access to database for unlimited users).

Citavi can be used in a virtual machine on Linux or OS X.[7][8] Swiss Academic Software discontinued development for an OS X native application in 2011.[9]

Features

Citavi's core features are reference management, knowledge organization, and task planning. An online search feature lets the user search databases and catalogs from within the program. Citavi's online help includes an email tutorial, videos, an online manual, and a user forum.[10]

Reference management

  • Reference types for common sources.[11]
  • Management of local files, such as PDFs (including automatic metadata import from PDF).[12]
  • Online search in thousands of databases and library catalogs.[13][14]
  • Collaboration with others on a local network.[15]
  • Subscription to RSS feeds from within Citavi.
  • Import from other reference management programs and formats, including EndNote, Reference Manager, ProCite, and BibTeX.[16]

    • for Internet browsers (Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Google Chrome[17]
      • ISBNs on web pages can be imported in Citavi with a click.
      • Web pages are imported as a reference
      • Web pages can be transformed into a PDF document to save the content of the page.
    • for Adobe Acrobat and Acrobat Reader
      • PDF documents can be imported with a click. If the document has a DOI, it is used to automatically add bibliographical information.
  • PDF documents can be annotated directly in Citavi.
  • Works with various word processors
    • Word Add-In for Word versions 2010, 2013, 365, and 2016.
    • In OpenOffice Writer and LibreOffice Writer, placeholders are inserted into the text, with subsequent formatting in one of the included citation styles.
    • Works with any program that can process files in RTF (i.e. Scrivener) via the clipboard.
    • Integration with LaTeX editor LyX via Named Pipe (Configuration guide; PDF; 1.2 MB).
    • Other supported LaTeX editors: LEd, Texmaker, TeXnicCenter, TeXstudio, TeXworks, WinEdt, WinShell). Directly insert quotations and configurable cite commands (i.e. \cite{Smith2013}) per keyboard shortcut.
  • Publishing in all common citation styles. At the moment, over 6,000 citation styles are available (31 May 2016). Registered users can request styles for scientific journals for free.[18]
  • Integrated citation style editor with programmable components and templates. Advanced style finder.

Knowledge organization

  • Citavi can import text excerpts and images from documents as quotations and organize them together with own ideas imported as "thoughts".[19]
  • Quotations and thoughts can be categorized to reflect the structure in chapters of the final publication, making it possible to outline the paper before beginning the actual writing process.[20]
  • Annotations like quotations and comments are linked to the PDF document.
  • Citations in the text and in footnotes can be linked to their full entry in the bibliography.

Task planner

  • Citavi includes a task planner for scheduling tasks and project milestones.[21]
  • Tasks like "Discuss" or "Examine" can be linked directly to the PDF document.

For LaTeX users Citavi offers the following functions

  • Automatic creation of BibTeX keys for titles in Citavi, configurable.[22]
  • Several configurable BibTeX and Biblatex export filters. Citavi scans the document and the titles from Citavi to a BibTeX file that LaTeX/BibTeX can use to format the text.[23]

Compatibility

  • Citavi can export data in different formats to many other reference management programs.[24]
  • Citavi can import files from many other reference management programs, including but not limited to EndNote, ProCite, and ReferenceManager.[16]
