The College of Engineering and Technology, Bhubaneswar (CETB) is a government engineering institution in Odisha, India. Established in 1981, by the Government of Odisha (then Orissa) it became a constituent college of the Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology. Since 2002, CET Bhubaneswar is a constituent college of Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT). The college campus covers 107.8 acres (0.436 km2). Students are admitted into this College through Joint Entrance Examination conducted by the Government of India. It has current intake capacity of 957. The CETB is most diverse engineering institutes of Government of Odisha which is strategically located in the capital city of Bhubaneswar. CETB is considered as a par with finest Institutes like Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and Jadavpur University in the eastern part of India in terms of curricula, program comprehensiveness, and department diversity. [1][2]The Government of Odisha has considered to grant Unitary University status to CETB. [3][4][5][6]In a recent annual alumni meet, necessary was felt and demand was made to Government of Odisha to grant unitary University status to CETB under the name Odisha Technological University, Bhubaneswar (OTUB) very soon.

Academic Departments

This Government College of Engineering and Technology at Bhubaneswar has the most comprehensive set of programs and corresponding diverse set of departments. For example, electrical engineering, architecture, textile, Fashion technology, etc. This institute can be considered as a par with finest Institutes like Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and Jadavpur University in the eastern part of India in that respect. In fact, CETB is the only government College in the eastern part of India such diverse set of Engineering programs, Master of Computer Application (MCA), and Architecture. The highest rank holder students in the entrance examination join CETB. [7]The college currently has a total of 14 departments at presented which are listed:

The CETB is a recipient of TEQIP — II project of World Bank through MHRD, Government of India, New Delhi. CETB is one of the two of the State of Odisha to receive TEQIP-II funds for a period of 5 years. CETB is the home to the following center for excellence:

  • Centre for Micro Electronics
  • Centre for Mechanics
  • Centre for Nanobiotechnology
  • Modrob project centre

Academic Programs

The CETB is most diverse engineering institutes of Government of Odisha which is strategically located in the capital city of Bhubaneswar.

The CETB provides Bachelor of Technology degrees in 11 disciplines of engineering: Architecture, Bachelor in Planning, Biotechnology, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Fashion & Apparel Technology, Information Technology, Instrumentation & Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Textile Engineering. The Bachelor of Architecture degree is of 5-year duration and rest all are of 4 years duration. Besides CETB offers a three-year Master of Computer Applications programme. The typical enrolment is 60 to 120 for each of the programs.

[8]The CETB conducts M.Tech. program in 20 specializations including: in Nanobiotechnology, VLSI & Embedded Systems,Mechanical System Design & Dynamics,Structural Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Management, Computer Science and Engineering, and Information Technology and an M.Arch course.

A three-year B.Tech degree for diploma holders as lateral entries is also offered. All courses are full-time. 2014-15 academic year many new courses will be started few new M.Tech. in every branches and 5 year dual degree courses (M.Sc.) along with 2-year M.Sc. in physics, chemistry and few more.

Each academic year consists of two semesters and a summer term. The education system is organised around a credit system, which ensures continuous evaluation of a student's performance and provides flexibility to choose courses to suit the student's ability or convenience. Each course is assigned credits depending upon the class hours.

Eight departments conduct Ph.D. programmes. The Ph.D. program are the following: Biotechnology, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, and Physics. The CETB has all the lab infrastructure to conduct cutting-edge research in diverse areas.

Admissions and Examinations

B. Tech. and MCA admission to undergraduate degrees is made through a joint entrance examination conducted each year by the Government of Odisha. Registration is required at the beginning of each semester. Students are allowed to appear for examination for registered courses only, and should consult with the respective department heads for guidance before registration. Students are eligible to appear for examinations provided they attend a minimum of 75 per cent of their theory, practical, and sessional classes scheduled during the semester.

Research and Educational Infrastructure at CETB

Central Computing Facility

  • I - CETB has more than 300 computers with Linux and Windows operating system for use by the students, faculty, and staff.
  • II - CETB has a2nd computing facility of 128 computers including servers and workstations to meet the increasing computing demand from the researchers.

Central Internet Facility

CETB has state-of-the-art Internet facility through National Mission of Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). CETB has overall 20 Mbps connection facility via BNSL and NMEICT.

Wi-Fi Facility

Wi-Fi is key in our current social network driven smart infrastructure. CETB thus has round the clock Wi-Fi connectivity for students, faculty, and staff. Wi-Fi is made possible through the National Knowledge Network (NKN) scheme.

Campus and Campus Life at CETB

Campus Structure

The campus covers the entire Techno-Campus plot, and is 1.9 km NH 5. Despite being in an urban location it is a noise free zone surrounded by the training school of forest rangers and Bhubaneswar Drinking Water Supply Project Water Storage. Close by is Jaydev Vatika, a 200+ acre public park (1.5 km) and AMRI Hospital (1.5 km). SUM Hospital and blood bank is 2.5 km (main gate to main gate on road). A portion of a hill also falls within the campus. Bus no. 333 connects the college to most of the places within the city including railway station, main bus stands air port and Lingaraja Temple.

There are 2 canteens serving delicacies, 3 fast food shops and a shopping complex.

There are independent full sized playgrounds for Cricket and Football and courts for basketball, badminton, volleyball and tennis. The students square at the centre of academic blocks has a stage facility. There is a Syndicate Bank branch and a BSNL telecom tower on campus.

The college Gym has fairly good number of equipment. The reading room subscribes 10 newspapers, national, international journals,and numerous magazines.

Supplementing it is the central computer laboratory with high speed fibre optic internet with speeds up to 10 MB/s for academic purposes only and free wi-fi for students with an average speed of 2.5 MB/s .

Campus Life

Classes for most start at 10:00 in the morning, and by 17:00 are over for all. in between there is a free period of 50 minutes. Students can utilize the rest of the day for various pursuits, clubs, societies, learn to play an instrument or learn a language. By 17:30 all those who have sporting interests are on the playgrounds.

The college also provides outgoing shuttle bus every day at 17:30. For medical needs college arranges for student to be taken to hospital.

There is a Syndicate bank in the campus with a SBI ATM near the campus.

Training and Internship of CETB Student

Students actively take part in training and internship activities. Many students have gone ahead for paid internships after first year itself. Students have benefited MSME (Government of India) trainings at Central Tool Room & Training Centre (CTTC). At present CETB students are interning at Tata Steel, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Consultancy Services, Steel Authority of India (SAIL) - Rourkela Steel Plant, National Aluminium Company (NALCO), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) labs, Indian Railways, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL), VentureHire (Bangalore), Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited (NINL), Vedanta Resources, Dalmia Cements (Rajgangpur), Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Army Base Workshop, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, etc.

The college has year on year excellent placements. In the placement season 2012-13, the highest compensation had been Rs 18 lakhs per annum (lpa) offered to 8 students by Reverside, a South African firm. Tata steel has offered 8 lpa, FCS 5.5 lpa, Maruti Suzuki 4.8 lpa, Paradeep pPhosphates 4 lpa.

In 2012, Tata Steel offered 8.4 lpa, Ashok Leyland 7.2 lpa, NINL (MMTC) 6 lpa, Jindal & Aspiring Minds in excess of 5 lpa. Deloitte, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Cummins & Sesa Goa offered 4.6 to 5 lpa, TCS 3.2 lpa.

Most students of CETB receive some form of scholarship. A large number of them are beneficiaries of the CAFAS scholarship scheme which provides INR 10,000 annually. Top 20% students of every class are awarded CET merit scholarship of INR 400 per month. There also exists the Alumni scholarship and FFE scholarship worth INR 25,000 and also other Merit-cum-Need scholarships. There are also several scholarships like Prerna Scholarship the SC & ST development department of state government (INR 25,000- INR 50,000) and scholarships the district administration.

CETB Student Events

  • "Xtasy" is the college's cultural extravaganza, held each January. This was first started in April 1992 in the form of a techno-cultural convention as X-TASY '92.
  • "The Idea Challenge" brings together various known CEOs e.g.Milk Mantra,Tatwa etc. of the state together to help guide students with their start-ups.
  • "CETMUN" is the annual MODEL NATIONS which is recognised by the Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan and organised by CETADEL.
  • "SANNIDHYA" is the annual technical- Department event of Civil Engineering Department
  • "Perceptions" is the annual technical meet.
  • The college organizes an annual athletics meet and the "Engineers Cup" Inter-college cricket,football,volleyball,badminton,basketball tournament in December–January.

Campus Organisations

  • "CETADEL" is the official literary, intellectual, and creative society. It provides an incubation for free thought and open acceptance of constructive vision. It also conducts events in quizzing, writing, jamming, debating and runs a think tank, Ravinder Kaushik Centre for Policy Research (and security studies). It publishes the annual college magazine, The Engineering Herald
  • "The Amuza" is the dramatics society of CET is a group of acting enthusiasts who perform acts based on raging social issues. Amuza performs enactments such as Nukkad Nataks(Street Play), Theatre Plays, Mimicry, Stand-up comedies and Mime plays and have amazed crowds within and outside the college.
  • National Service Scheme
  • The E-Cell has been instrumental in the startups of students of CET, like Joylab, Brokenscooter.com, NowFloats and many others.
  • VoiX, the debating wing
  • "Zairza" is the official technical society, initiated by students. Founded in the 2005–2006 school year with Software and Manual robotics as the two main wings, it was made an official event by the college Administration in 2007 with addition of Automated robotics.
  • Energy club is the official club dealing in Energy Conservation & Power Optimization under the Dept. of Electrical Engineering.
  • The college has an ASME chapter under the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
  • "Arpeggio" is the music club dealing in vocals, instruments & sound production.
  • The college rock bands, Iris Chants, Shabd and Aroha perform across the state.
  • The college also has a SAE chapter. Blue Jay Racing Team is the official BAJA SAE racing team of the college. The team participated in Virtual BAJA SAE 2016.
  • ASME CET-Bhubaneswar Chapter is one of the largest ASME student chapters in the Eastern region of India. This Chapter was initiated by 4th Year and 3rd Year students led by Sidhartha Pattnaik and Bidit Mohanty.
  • The ISTE chapter is the largest in Odisha.

  • Udaan deals with aero modeling .
  • CET Rising is the college blog.
  • CET for the first time organised a Rath yatra in 2015 by the 4th year students,spearheaded by Durga Prasad Adhikary.

Unitary University Status as Odisha Technological University, Bhubaneswar (OTUB)

It is proposed to elevate the College as a unitary Technical University of the state. The NBA team has visited the College to examine if the college is fit for a University status or not. Biju Pattanaik University of Technology (BPUT) has already issued no-objection certificate for unitary University status of CETB. [3][4][5][6]In a recent annual alumni meet the demand was made to Government of Odisha to grant unitary University status to CETB under the name Odisha Technological University, Bhubaneswar (OTUB).
