Earth Fare founded in 1975 by Roger Derrough, is a Fletcher, North Carolina-based natural foods grocer. The company website explains a "Food Philosophy" and "Boot list" (Ingredients or food production methods Earthfare has banned from its shelves) Among the ingredients and methods banned are: High Fructose Corn Syrup, artificial fats or artificial trans fats, artificial colors, artificial flavors, artificial preservatives, artificial sweeteners, antibiotics or synthetic growth hormones in fresh meat or dairy, and bleached or bromated flour"[1] These food standards, along with competitive and innovative merchandising has made Earth Fare a serious competitor for Whole Foods Market, Sprouts and Trader Joe's in the natural foods sector.
