Ermes Visconti

Ermes Visconti di San Vito (1784 – 1841) was an Italian man of letters.

Biography

Ermes Visconti was born at Milan, the son of Carlo Francesco Visconti, Marquis of San Vito, and Margherita dal Verme (he was followed by his siblings Giuseppe and Luigia).[1]

He studied at the University of Pavia under Vincenzo Monti, who at the time held the chair of eloquence. He met and was a friend of Claude Fauriel and Alessandro Manzoni. He shared with Manzoni the path of Catholic conversion and romantic ideas. Ermes' sister, Luigia, was Manzoni's first love.
