Summary

<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shortwave" class="extiw" title="en:Shortwave">Shortwave</a> transmitting station of the USA International Broadcasting Bureau near Biblis, Germany, used to broadcast programmes of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_Free_Europe" class="extiw" title="en:Radio Free Europe">Radio Free Europe</a>/Radio Liberty into Eastern Europe and Russia. The antennas are mostly a type known as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/curtain_array" class="extiw" title="en:curtain array">curtain array</a>, consisting of a rectangular array of wire <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/dipole_antenna" class="extiw" title="en:dipole antenna">dipole antennas</a> suspended in front of a vertical reflector made of a "curtain" of parallel wires. They radiate a powerful beam of radio waves into the sky at a shallow angle just above the horizon, toward the target country. The radio waves are reflected back to Earth over the horizon by a layer of charged particles in the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ionosphere" class="extiw" title="en:ionosphere">ionosphere</a>.
