Coleman has <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_American" class="extiw" title="w:Irish American">Irish ancestry</a> on both sides of her family and she played the two instruments illustrated during an international broadcast from earth orbit to celebrate Saint Patrick's Day.

Coleman brought her own flute into space, another belonging to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian_Anderson" class="extiw" title="w:Ian Anderson">Ian Anderson</a> of the rock music group <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jethro_Tull_(band)" class="extiw" title="w:Jethro Tull (band)">Jethro Tull</a>, and the two instruments shown, belonging to the Irish music group, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chieftains" class="extiw" title="w:The Chieftains">The Chieftains</a>. The larger instrument in the picture is a hundred-year-old flute belonging to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Molloy" class="extiw" title="w:Matt Molloy">Matt Molloy</a>, and the smaller <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/tin_whistle" class="extiw" title="w:tin whistle">tin whistle</a> or penny whistle belongs to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paddy_Maloney" class="extiw" title="w:Paddy Maloney">Paddy Maloney</a>.

The recording of Coleman's Saint Patrick's Day performance on NASA TV was later included in a track called "The Chieftains In Orbit" on their 2012 album, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voice_of_Ages" class="extiw" title="w:Voice of Ages">Voice of Ages</a>.
