Summary

The photo shows welding in an enclosed chamber to collect welding fumes for analysis and characterization. The goal is to identify and improve welding processes that generate as little fume, and especially as little hexavalent chromium, as possible, while maintaining good quality welds. Welders have increased incidences of lung cancers and other respiratory diseases, and this is an opportunity to apply chemistry and engineering to find ways to minimize workplace hazards. Stopping or slowing hazards at the source can be especially useful, and make engineering controls and other techniques even more effective.
