Summary
1879 Woodblock-print advertisement for an American production of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.M.S._Pinafore" class="extiw" title="en:H.M.S. Pinafore">en:H.M.S. Pinafore</a>, housed at the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Library_of_Congress" class="extiw" title="en:Library of Congress">en:Library of Congress</a>. The Library of Congress site says that they are <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%27Oyly_Carte_Opera_Company" class="extiw" title="en:D'Oyly Carte Opera Company">en:D'Oyly Carte Opera Company</a> productions <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="http://www.loc.gov/preserv/bachbase/bbcprint.html">(see here)</a>, but that seems dubious, since Carte's name does not appear on the poster, and he would have been eager to distinguish his production (December 1879) from the many unauthorised productions. The Library of Congress does not make any additional copyright claims to its material, and, given the date, this is clearly out of copyright. Further, see below
