The left side of the image depicts Cochrane as a heroic naval officer. He wears his Royal Navy uniform and on the floor beside him is a list of his notable battles. The right side depicts him as a disgraced civilian within the walls of the King's Bench Prison. His sword, epaulette and badge of the Order of the Bath lay broken and scattered on the floor.
