The drawing depicts a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landsknecht" class="extiw" title="w:Landsknecht">landsknecht</a>, a German mercenary pikeman, wearing the peacock feather and saltire crosses of the Habsburgs. On the right is the crest of Christoph von Eberstein, and in the background a landscape. These elements are set within an arch on which two soldiers—the one on the left imperial, the one on the right a Swiss confederate—engage lances with each other. Count Christoph von Eberstein (1502–27) was a renowned landsknecht commander. In April 1522, the landsknechts inflicted a heavy defeat on the Swiss confederates at the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Bicocca" class="extiw" title="w:Battle of Bicocca">Battle of Bicocca</a> (Müller, 276).
