Description Two males in a a small attic room in the Marine Hospital in the village of Stapleton on Staten Island, New York, the birthplace of NIH. In 1887, 27 year old Dr. Joseph Kinyoun set up his one person laboratory of hygiene to research cholera and other communicable diseases such as diphtheria, typhoid, small pox, typhus, plague and tuberculosis.
