THE HOUSE WAS BUILT BY GOVERNOR WILLIAM “EXTRA BILLY” SMITH IN 1845 AND WAS THEN KNOWN AS MONTE ROSA.  JAMES K. MADDUX BOUGHT THE ESTATE IN 1895 AND CHANGED THE NAME TO NEPTUNE LODGE IN HONOR OF HIS FAMOUS RACE HORSE.
