Summary

This is the former US 431 alignment south of the small community of Pittsview in Russell County, Alabama. This was part of a 16 mile two lane segment which was labeled "one of the deadliest highways in the United States" by Reader's Digest in 2000. Widening of the corridor has resulted in a bypass for US 431 being opened in 2008, now leaving the original route a quiet country road. Crosses dot the roadside to symbolize fatal accidents (45 between 1992 and 2006) that occurred. The primary problems were driver speeding and improper passing approaching hills, which could conceal oncoming vehicles.
