Purpose of use |
Tassie was one of the only artists to have convinced Smith to sit for a sketch. As such, most (if not all) of the iconic profile portraits of Smith are derived from this medallion (a similar impression without markings was also created). This image is necessary to the encyclopedic understanding of Smith and the portraiture of Smith as it explains later image style and illustrates that similarity in a fashion that text can not.
