Portion used

Full, in order to provide the reader with sufficient information to see the relationship between this piece and follow-on works.

Low resolution?

Yes

Purpose of use

Tassie was one of the only artists to have convinced Smith to sit for a sketch. As such, most (if not all) of the iconic profile portraits of Smith are derived from this medallion (a similar impression without markings was also created). This image is necessary to the encyclopedic understanding of Smith and the portraiture of Smith as it explains later image style and illustrates that similarity in a fashion that text can not. Replaceable?

Not replaceable by a free image unless the National Galleries of Scotland changes their photography policy.

Other information

While the original work is in the public domain, the photograph of this piece of three dimensional art is a derivative work and is property of the National Galleries of Scotland.
