The Primrose Tomb This is the tomb of Benjamin Disraeli, and his wife Mary-Anne (Vicountess Beaconsfield in her own right). Benjamin Disraeli (21.12.1804-19.4.1881) was Tory (Conservative) Prime Minister of Britain twice, firstly on 29th Feb 1868 on Lord Derby's resignation due to ill health two days previously, he was defeated however in the General Election of November the same year. His second term of office was longer and more successful. He defeated Gladstone to become Prime Minister on 20th Feb. 1874, holding the office until defeated himself by Gladstone in April 1880. During his period in office he passed the Royal Titles Act which raised Victoria from a mere Queen to an Empress ! The grateful sovereign promptly made Disraeli Earl of Beaconsfield.
The primrose was Disraeli's favourite flower, knowing this Queen Victoria sent a wreath of them to his funeral with the handwritten message: "His favourite flowers: from Osborne: a tribute of affectionate regard from Queen Victoria." The anniversary of his death (four days after this photo was taken) became known as Primrose Day.
