Sheeks, who served as an Intelligence and Japanese Language Officer throughout the Pacific campaigns. More about him and his wartime experience can be read about in the book, "Pacific Legacy" by Rex Alan Smith and Gerald A. Meehl. Also a new book "One Marine's War" by Gerald A. Meehl.This image was first published in the October 1944 issue of National Geographic magazine. It was later used in the book FOLLOW ME! The Story of the Second Marine Division by Richard Johnston (Random House 1948).
