FTMA is the one-year film and television master’s degree program at Sacred Heart University in Stamford, Connecticut.
History
The program first started accepting graduate students in the fall of 2013,[1] becoming Connecticut’s first graduate film school.[2] Sacred Heart University’s Graduate Center location is close to NBC Sports, ESPN and other film studios, and 30 miles from New York City.[3]
The program was designed by faculty members and filmmakers Justin Liberman and Damon Maulucci (Detonator, Paul Williams: Still Alive), both of whom are Connecticut natives and graduates of Columbia University’s MFA graduate film program.[4]
FTMA’s 2013 inaugural class was 23 students.[5]
Departments, programs and equipment
The Film and Television Master’s program is a one-year program focusing on creating a conservatory-like atmosphere to teach the art of narrative storytelling, both traditional and in the new Internet-based media, as well as film theory.[2][6] Students participate in workshops and create independent film, television and transmedia projects,[3] and receive assistance from faculty in developing professional relationships.[1] The school’s intention is for students to gain real-world experience through internships, industry mentorships and practical learning, leaving the program with a portfolio reflecting their individual goals.[6]
The program offers advanced classes in film directing, producing, screenwriting, television production and film theory courses.[6] Equipment provided includes HD cameras, editing software (Adobe Premiere and Avid Media Composer) and other post-production software (including After Effects, Pro Tools and DaVinci color correction).[1]
Classes are held in Sacred Heart University’s Graduate Center in downtown Stamford, Connecticut, which opened on October 22, 2013.[5] Stamford mayor Michael Pavia and Sacred Heart president John J. Petillo spoke at the opening.[7]
Faculty
Faculty includes: three-time Emmy Award winner Joe Alicastro (visiting instructor); James Castonguay (associate professor and director of graduate programs); Sidney Gottlieb (professor); Justin Liberman (visiting professor and program co-coordinator); Damon Maulucci (visiting professor and program co-coordinator); and Sara Ross (associate professor).
Notable guest lecturers include producers Michael Hausman (Amadeus, The People vs. Larry Flynt, Brokeback Mountain)[8] and Jessica Caldwell (Electrick Children).[5]
