Fritz Bolle
Fritz Bolle (10 June 1908 – 8 April 1982) was a German zoologist, editor and writer.
Biography
Bolle dropped out of his zoology studies. During World War II, he was employed from 1943 to 1945 in a subcamp called Vorwerk Mitte of the Buchenwald concentration camp to have laborers build an underground factory for rocket engines.
He later worked for the publishing house Droemer Knaur as chief editor. Bolle wrote and translated a large number of popular science books, was a contributor and author at the popular science magazine Orion, and editor of Knaur's Lexikon A - Z. As an editor, he supervised Johannes Mario Simmel, Peter Bamm, Hans-Joachim Schoeps, among others.
As of 2017, it became known through Götz Aly that Bolle at Droemer had on several occasions at different times ensured that Raul Hilberg's book The Destruction of the European Jews had not been translated and published in German by Droemer for decades, despite a corresponding contract with the author. Whether his background was decisive for his attitude, or rather a competitive thinking of West German researchers, especially from the Institute of Contemporary History, who repeatedly issued negative reviews of Hilberg's book (one was discovered in the estate of Helmut Krausnick, then director of the Institute), cannot yet be decided.
