Gazi Baba (Macedonian: <phonos file="Mk-Gazi Baba.ogg">Гази Баба</phonos>) is one of the ten municipalities that create the city of Skopje, the capital of the Republic of Macedonia.

Name

The name of the municipality comes from the nickname of the Ottoman poet Aşık Çelebi. In Turkish, Gazi means "war veteran" and baba means "father".

Geography

The municipality borders Petrovec Municipality, Studeničani Municipality and Aerodrom Municipality to the south, Centar Municipality, Čair Municipality and Butel Municipality to the west, Lipkovo Municipality to the northeast, and Aračinovo Municipality and Ilinden Municipality to the east.

Demographics

According to the last national census from 2002, the municipality has 72,617 inhabitants making it the most populous municipality in Greater Skopje.[1] Ethnic groups in the municipality include:

  • Macedonians = 53,497 (73.67%)
  • Albanians = 12,502 (17.21%)
  • Serbs = 2,097 (2.9%)
  • Roma = 2,082 (2.9%)
  • Bosniaks = 710 (1.0%)
  • Turks = 606 (0.8%)
  • Vlachs = 236 (0.3%)
  • others = 887 (1.2%)
