The base was located at Convict's Bay, St. George's Parish. It was originally built for the use of the Royal Navy.

The RCN subsequently abandoned HMCS Somers Isles when Canada's military consolidated its operations at Somerset Island at the west end of Bermuda - see CFS Bermuda.

Prior to this, the RCN worked with the RN in establishing an anti-submarine training program at Casemates Barracks starting in 1939.

The base also assisted with converting 50 ex-USN destroyers to RN and RCN service during World War II under the Lend-Lease program.
