Lists Hospitals in Canada

The Hamilton General Hospital (HGH) is a major teaching hospital in downtown Hamilton, Canada, on the corners of Barton Street East and Victoria Avenue North. It is operated by Hamilton Health Sciences and is formally affiliated with McMaster University Medical School.

HGH is also the only Level 1 Trauma Centre in Southern Ontario and it is the busiest cardiac surgery hospital in Canada, performing over 1,600 open heart surgeries annually.[2] The hospital was recently ranked 2nd in Canada for research according to Research Infosource Inc.[3]

History

Founded in 1848, the hospital became a part of Hamilton Health Sciences in 1996 when Hamilton General, Henderson General, McMaster University Medical Centre, McMaster Children's Hospital and Chedoke Hospital merged. This union formed one of the largest teaching hospitals in Ontario, operating across four sites with approximately 8,000 employees and 1,000 physicians. Other hospitals soon followed.

Facilities

The hospital is equipped with a rooftop helipad (TC LID: CPK3).[4] Hamilton General Hospital is a regional centre of excellence specializing in cardiac and vascular care, neuroscience, trauma and burn treatment, stroke and rehabilitation. It is home to the state-of-the-art Dofasco Heart Investigation Unit; one of the province’s few rooftop heliports; a Level 1 trauma centre and the second busiest burn unit in Ontario. Also located at the General site are the Regional Rehabilitation Centre and the David Braley Cardiac, Vascular and Stroke Research Institute.

The David Braley Cardiac, Vascular and Stroke Research Institute is a $100-million research centre located behind the Hamilton General Hospital.[5] It is home to more than 400 staff and researchers. The new building with 200,000 square feet (19,000 m2) opened 11 March 2010.[5] At least 250 new jobs will be added to the local economy.[6] David Braley contributed $10-million towards the project. Braley's donation marks an important transition in Hamilton's economy, as he takes money he made in the industrial economy and uses it to help the community develop a more diverse economic base. David Braley is the president of auto-parts manufacturer Orlick Industries Ltd., former owner of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and current owner of the BC Lions and Toronto Argonauts.[7][8]

Fundraising

The Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation raises funds for capital projects, equipment and research needs of Hamilton General Hospital.
