The Hashemite University ( الجامعة الهاشمية ), often abbreviated HU, is a state-supported university located in Zarqa, Jordan. The Hashemite University has a comprehensive campus with a total built-up area of 300,000 square metres (3,200,000 sq ft), designed in four phases. The fourth design phase was completed in 2005, exceeding 50,000 square metres.

The university includes Faculties of Arts, Science, Educational Science, Supporting Medical Sciences Nursing College, Engineering, Literature and many other buildings and related services. It is located on the outskirts of Zarqa on two main highways with a site area of about 1,100,000 square metres (12,000,000 sq ft), rendering it as one of the largest universities in Jordan. It is uniquely designed with a composition of the various campus buildings dispersed in the landscape while incorporating the latest technological and educational trends. The urban planning considered the environmental, transportation and socio-economic services in addition to the humanitarian aspects and interactions in order to create a homogeneous urban textile. Shaded walkways, pergolas and wind barriers were also designed for protection from high temperature, wind, sun and pollution. It is named after the Jordanian royal family—the Hashemites—and was established in the outskirts of Zarqa by a royal decree in 1995. It started out with four different colleges and expanded to fourteen through the years. Its vision is to achieve an academic pioneering position and excellence in university teaching, scientific research, at both the national and regional levels, to serve society through its educational functions, and to participate in the advancement of knowledge.

History

The Royal Decree to establish the Hashemite University was issued on 19 June 1991. Teaching at the university started on 16 September 1995. A Royal Committee was formed to manage and supervise this task headed by His Excellency the senate, Mudar Badran, and included seven other members of specialists and experts in different fields of higher education. Similarly, The Board of Trustees was formed and included eleven members of specialists and experts of different education-related fields and headed by his Excellency the senate, Mudhar Babdran.

The Hashemite University is located in the vicinity of Zarqa on a strategic site parallel to the international highway that links Amman with Mafraq, at the crossroad that connects Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Iraq. The total area of the university's campus is 8519 acres 15% of which was used for buildings, 25% for planting and agriculture, and the rest which is more than half of the area (65%) is desert.

Teaching started at the onset of the academic year 1995/1996. Students were admitted to the three functioning faculties: Sciences and arts, Economics and Administrative Sciences and Educational Sciences.

The Hashemite University is a four-year coeducational institution, its objectives were stated to be a university committed to excellence in teaching and research. Its grand mission is to offer service and consultation to the local community in addition to the larger society, and to be a cornerstone in the accumulative efforts with other sister universities in Jordan to enhance academic cooperation between Jordan and Arab nations and between Jordan and the world.

Future Outlooks

First: Within the area of the national strategy for higher education: To realize the royal vision related to higher education, the university is heading forward in implementing its strategy and plans for the coming five year in order to guarantee the quality of the learning outcomes that ensure its competitive potentials.

Second: Building in campus a dormitory for girls. Implementing the housing project for the university employees. Implementing the investment agreement with the Free Zones corporation on the university land.

Students

The total number of students in the Hashemite University at the beginning of the academic year 2009/2010 was about 18,000. They were distributed on the colleges as follows in the table below, but throughout the years the university has accepted more students than many of the universities in Jordan not only through its regular program (competing for the major- TANAFOS), but also through its Parallel program which students have a higher credit hour tuition then Regular program students.

Academics

The university comprises 14 colleges (faculties) and institutes:

• Faculty of Engineering

Established in August, 1998, is considered one of the strongest engineering schools in the Middle East. The first class of Engineers graduated in 2003. It offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in eight programs: Architecture, Biomedical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Industrial, Mechanical, and Mechatronics Engineering. As of the academic year 2009/2010 there were 3012 undergraduate students and 46 graduate students. International students number 683 forming 22.33% of the total students, mostly from neighboring countries.

The ratio of female students to the total number of students in the engineering school is 38.6% which is higher than the average ratio of engineering female students of total engineering students in both the United States and Europe (only 23% in the United States and 15% in Europe).

• Faculty of Sciences (FOS) The Faculty of Science was initially established as part of a combined Science and Arts Faculty in 1995/1996. In 1998/1999, the Department of Geology was separated from the Faculty and become a part of the Faculty of Natural Resources and Environment and in 2001/2002. It holds four departments, which are Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Biotechnology.
• Faculty of Arts (FOA)

The Faculty of Arts has been active at the University since its establishment in 1995. The Faculty offers courses in four majors: Arabic Language and Literature, English Language and Literature (with a separate program in Literature and Cultural Studies), Humanities and Social Sciences, and Supplementary Humanities—which was introduced recently due to the expansion of university requirements and electives that fall under the umbrella of humanities.

The Faculty offers bachelor's degrees in four majors: Arabic Language and Literature, English Language and Literature, Literature and Cultural Studies (taught in the English language), and International Relations and Strategic Studies. The Faculty also offers graduate programs in the fields of Linguistics and Literature and Criticism (Department of Arabic), Peace and Conflict Studies (Department of Humanities and Social Sciences), and English Studies (Department of English). The college hopes to start, in the near future, a doctoral program in Arabic Language and Literature, and in two tracks: Linguistics and Literature and Criticism.

• Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences (FOE) Since its beginning, September 1995, the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Science has extensive and diverse specialized programs that mainly fulfill its education, research, services and national missions. Under this general interest, the faculty offered four main BA courses i.e., Accounting, Business Administration, Economic, and Finance and through the years added Banking and Financial sciences.

Courses offering recognize the fundamental role of the offered courses in both business and liberal arts education, in addition to equip students for a very much wide range of economic, financial, banking and management careers.

The expansion of the BA courses has been reflected positively in the number of students enrolled. Statistically, 3880 enrollments have been reflected by the faculty during the year 2007/2008 compared to 123 enrollments for year 1995/1996. Currently, there are 174 students at the master level and 3706 students at the undergraduate level.

• Faculty of Allied Health Sciences

The Faculty of Allied Health Sciences (FAHS) was established in 1998 by the decree (2/1/1998) of the board of trustees. The students’ enrollment was first started in 2000 after a comprehensive study of the importance of such medical fields. The faculty is composed of five different departments; Medical Laboratory Sciences, Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Radiological medical image. Allied health professionals are most in demand in today's healthcare industry. A national shortage has markedly increased job prospects in both the medical setting and in industry. The faculty is located now within the Medical Complex that includes as well both Medicine and Nursing.

The Faculty offers mainly bachelor's degrees (B.Sc) in the five different scientific fields or department. The Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences started on Feb 2009 offering a master's degree (M.Sc) in Medical Laboratory Sciences.

Students will be held to the requirements of the curriculum of the year in which they were accepted. Internship Program Faculty students have an internship program that is consist of 12 credit hours that is supervised by staff members, technicians and the allocation site trainers. The decree establishing a Faculty of Medicine at the Hashemite University was issued in the academic year 2005/2006. It is the newest medical college in the country after the medical colleges in University of Jordan, Jordan University of Science and technology and Mutah University. The college Grants the BA Degree of "Doctor of Medicine" after completion 257 credit hours spread through 6 years, three of them which are about basic medical sciences and the other three are clinical years where the students usually take classes at hospitals associated with the University's medical college and participate in surgeries and clinical rounds for the patients, one of the main hospital is Prince Hamza Hospital(PHH) the teaching hospital where postgraduate students undergo their residencies located in Amman, Jordan and Zarqa Hospital in the city of Zarqa. On June 4, 2012 The college celebrated the graduation of the first class of Medicine.

Nature of the Medical Program The Faculty of Medicine awards the Bachelor of Doctor of Medicine (MD) after completion of six years comprising three years of medical sciences and three clinical years. Students are admitted to medicine based solely on their grade point average in their high school national general exam (Tawjihi); there are neither entrance interviews nor psychometric exams. The cutoff average used for admissions into medicine is the highest among all the other disciplines offered by universities. For example, the cutoff average used over the past five years has been: 97.7 (2009), 97.7 (2010), 98.3 (2011), and 98.3 (2012). Although in the minority, the faculty of medicine accepts students from Palestine and occupied territories, Syria, Arab states of the Persian Gulf, and other countries. Tuition is significantly higher for the foreign students Going Over 250 JD. Although initially taught in a Modular system-based format, innovative changes were introduced into the curriculum at HU in 2011. Balancing basic science principles, clinical skills Lab, and psycho-social concepts, the new curriculum placed the student at the center. Rather than relying on the teacher to deliver knowledge, students were empowered to become more self-directed in their learning. During the first year and a half of their program, students are taught basic science in a traditional format. In an integrated module fashion, the next year and half is devoted to studying nine body systems: cardiovascular, respiratory, hematopoietic, digestive, endocrine, musculoskeletal, neuroscience 1 and 2, and reproductive and urinary. Towards the end of the third year students begin direct contact with patients in hospital settings. The last three years are spent in supervised inpatient and outpatient settings to develop their diagnostic and treatment competencies; the clinical years begin fully at the beginning of year 4 where students rotate through various areas of general clinical medicine. Year 5 continues this pattern focusing more on specialized areas of medicine and surgery. In total, students are required to complete 257 hours of classes divided among compulsory and elective courses. After completion of their 6th year, students are required to complete internship (imtiaz), which is a one-year term in general practice for which they are not compensated for.

Evaluations are based primarily on written exams (marks are based on two midterms and one end of term exam) and percentage grades appear on transcripts. Practical exams are solely based on an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) type of standardized exams. In the final year, the school of medicine invites external examiners (from the United States, Britain, among others) to participate in student evaluations and to benefit from the experience of others.

Residency Students looking to specialize can apply for residency programs after completion of imtiaz (internship). Most residency programs are four years in length, but notable exceptions include neurosurgery (6 years), general surgery (5 years), orthopedic surgery (5 years), and urology (5 years). Residency programs are divided into two broad groups: major and minor specialties. Major programs include internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, while the rest are considered minor. This division reflects the number of available seats and thus the competitiveness of each specialty. In addition, the Faculty of Medicine is equipped with the latest educational tools; this includes interactive whiteboards, HPS (Human Patient Simulators), auditoriums and halls. The faculty is fully covered by wireless internet access serving both students and staff. There is also a library located within Ibn Sina Medical Faculties Complex dedicated to all medical sciences students. these are the following departments of the college: 1. • Faculty of Nursing

The Faculty of Nursing at the Hashemite University (HU) is a four-year educational Faculty committed to excellence in teaching and research. We offer service and consultation to the local community in addition to the larger society. The Faculty members at the Faculty are young, motivated, and have varied experiences in clinical settings. In addition, some of them are double qualified, which makes the Faculty more distinctive.

• Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences

The Hashemite University Board of Trustees approved the establishment of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences on November 10, 1998. The Faculty was brought to life in order to meet the increasing needs of the local community. In addition to the Hashemite University general and specific admission requirements, admission to the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences requires the successful completion of a health checkup and a motor educability test. NB: Admission to the Department of Sport Rehabilitation open's only to students of the Scientific Stream of the General Secondary School Certificate. Departments include Department of Sport Rehabilitation, Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences, and Department of Coaching and Sport Management. Most sports facilities needed for the achievement of goals and objectives set by the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences are provided. These facilities include:

1 - Exercise Physiology Lab.

2 - Bio-mechanics Lab.

3 - Indoor sports arena.

4 - Gymnastic court.

• Faculty of Educational Sciences (FEAS)

The Faculty of Educational Sciences was established in 1995 - 1996. It started with the three following departments, Department of Educational foundations and Administration, Department of Curricula and instruction, and The Department of Educational Psychology. Vision The Faculty of Educational Sciences aims to be leader in the preparing of teachers, administrators, supervisors and counselors, they're using the latest advances in educational research, E . Learning, and technology in teaching.

• Prince Hussein Bin Abdulla II of Information Technology (IT)

] In response to the continuous development in information technology, to keep pace with times and rapid changes in this sector, and because of the increasing regional and international demand for highly qualified specialists in information technology, the Faculty of Information Technology at Hashemite University has been established with three departments, Department of Computer Science and Applications (CSA), Department of Software Engineering (SWE), and Department of Computer Information System (CIS).

• Queen Rania Faculty for Childhood (QRFC)

"We, in Jordan, realise the importance of the early years of a child’s life, and we value the long-term economic and social benefits of investing in the formative and crucial ages from birth to eight years". (Rania Al-Abdullah, Queen of Jordan, 2001). The college holds two departments, special education and child education.

• Queen Rania Institute of Tourism and Heritage (QRITH)

The institute was established in September 2000 to assume an important role with collaborators within and outside the university to provide assistance and support to enhance sustainable management of natural, environmental and cultural resources. Departments Include Department of Conservation Science, Department of Sustainable Tourism, and Department of Cultural Resources Management and Museology.

• Faculty of Natural Resources and Environment (FENR)

The Faculty of Natural Resources and Environment is an alternative name to The Institute of Land, Water and Environment which was established at the beginning of the year 1999. The objective of having such a faculty was to strengthen the involvement of the Hashemite University, these are its departments Department of Land Management and Environment, Department of Earth Sciences and Environment, and Department of Water Management and Environment.

• Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical sciences

HU's pharmacy school accepted its first group of students during the fall semester of 2013, currently giving out two degrees, Administrative pharmacists and Industrial Pharmacists.

Library

The university library includes the main library building as well as five special purpose library halls, it houses a total of 233,814 books, of which the E-library has access to 47,000 E-books.

Main library

For applied sciences, engineering, and computer science, Humanities and social sciences. Since its establishment in 1995, the Hashemite University Library has been endowed with major attention and care from the university administration. This attention is represented in providing it with a qualified staff and the required financial shares. More than 165,000 volumes of library materials are available in forms of books, periodicals, theses microfilms, audiovisual materials ...etc. The library is currently subscribing to more than twenty-five databases and seven thousand electronic journals. 12,000 square metres is the total area of the library.

The library offers a number of services for the university members, students, academic and administrative staff, as well as researchers from outside the university, and the local community. The library also offers its daily services to visitors range number between 3,000 and 4,000 a day.

The library has undergone automation project offering computerized library information covering systems of acquisition, cataloging and circulation services using the HORIZON database management system.

The library is a member in the consortium of Jordanian Public University libraries (JoPULs). Jordan Library and Information Association, Arab Federation of University Libraries, and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), and the Center Of Excellence (COE).

Special-purpose libraries

• The Medical Library

It is located in the Ibn Sina Medical complex in the Medical college section and houses many medical books for the students.

• The Childhood Library

The Childhood Library is a very special library within the Department of Library Services / Division of Special Collections. It houses a special collection on childhood, children, family and related subjects to serve the information needs of staff and students at the Faculty of Queen Rania for Childhood. Houses a total of 7,000 books and periodicals that focus on childhood, children family, and related subjects.

• Social Work Library

Social Work Library (SWL) was launched within the context of a cooperation agreement between the Social Work Center at Hashemite University and Abdel-Hameed Shoman Foundation.

• American Studies and Resources Corner

For resources on American Literature, Heritage, American Foreign and Domestic Policies, American Economy, American Society and Cities, Music and Arts, and Famous American Characters. It also organizes digital video conferencing with affiliated universities and institutions in the United States.

• British Studies and Resources Corner

For English literature, English Language, and related subjects.

The e-learning center is located in the Eastern Auditorium Complex, it controls almost anything computer related from WiFi, staff PCs, and Multiple Choice Question-Based tests that are taken by students in many of the laboratories around campus.

Students

On Campus Services

The University has many services for its students which include a very large cafeteria, swimming pools, recreational areas with ping pong and board games also many internet labs free of charge to all the students. Also almost each college has at least one cafeteria or a fast food cottage-usually called "kookh" in Arabic meaning "-HUT" inside it with reasonable prices that serves every kind of foods, sandwiches, juices, and many more. Also it has "THE VILLAGE" which is a large supermarket that has anything that a students can think of from gifts, studying utensils, Donuts, Fast food restaurant, books, notebooks, pens, ice cream and many more.

Off campus Housing

The University offers housing for girls only in the city of Abdallah ben Adelaziz (Madent Elsharq) located 10 minutes away east from Zarqa city. It provides free transportation with a dorm-room including beds, washers, closets, LCD Televisions, water coolers, refrigerator, and an air-conditioner and any house hold appliance that is needed is provided and the housing is maintained by the university's maintenance crew. Also female supervision is available through the whole housing for keeping the girls safe.

• Double rooms: These rooms accommodate two students with two beds, and a joined bathroom.
• Single rooms: This room includes 2 beds but with separate bathrooms.
• Private rooms: This room includes one bed with one separate bathroom.

Health care and insurance

Health care is available to all students, the cost of which is included in the semester fees. It covers 100% of most services offered by the University Health Centers, which includes an emergency room, radiology department, an ambulance and Physicians present throughout working hours from 8 am till 5 pm, also Prince Hamza Hospital (PHH). The university provides free life insurance coverage to all students.
