Herrenhaus

In German-speaking countries the German term Herrenhaus (House of Lords) refers to an institution similar to an upper house, one of two chambers of a bicameral legislature.
More specifically, Herrenhaus can refer to the following:
- The Prussian House of Lords was the first chamber of the Prussian parliament from 1850 until 1918. The Herrenhaus building on Leipziger Straße in Berlin, designed by the architect Friedrich Schulze and erected between 1899 and 1904, is currently the seat of the German Bundesrat.
- The House of Lords (Austria) was the upper chamber of the Imperial Council (Reichsrat) of the Cisleithanian (Austrian) half of Austria-Hungary between 1867 and 1918. The Diet of Hungary (Országgyűlés) also included an upper "House of Magnates" (Főrendiház).
- Herrenhaus is also used in German to mean manor house or mansion.
