Hey! Say! JUMP is a nine-member Japanese idol group under the Japanese talent agency Johnny & Associates. The name Hey! Say! refers to the fact that all the members were born in the Heisei period and JUMP is an acronym for Johnny's Ultra Music Power.[1] Like agency seniors Hikaru Genji and V6, the group is split into two subgroups: Hey! Say! BEST (Boys Excellent Select Team) and Hey! Say! 7 (not to be confused with the temporary group of the same name), which consist of the five oldest members and four youngest members respectively.

During a KAT-TUN spring concert on April 3, 2007, Johnny's Juniors Yuya Takaki, Daiki Arioka, Ryosuke Yamada, Yuto Nakajima and Yuri Chinen were named to be part of a new group called Hey! Say! 7. Initially, the temporary status of the group was unclear, worrying a lot of fans of Johnny Jr's group J.J. Express as it could mean that the group was splitting up and that Yuto Nakajima, Yuya Takaki and Daiki Arioka would permanently be in this group instead.

On June 16, 2007, it was announced that Hey! Say! 7 would release "Hey! Say!" as a single on August 1, 2007. While the A-side "Hey! Say!" was used as the second opening song for the anime Lovely Complex, the single's B-side "Bon Bon" was used as the second ending song for the same anime.[2] The single went on to sell 120,520 copies in its first week, making the group the youngest male group to top the Oricon singles chart.[3]

Late 2007: Debut of Hey! Say! JUMP

On September 24, 2007, Johnny & Associates announced the formation of Hey! Say! JUMP, the agency's largest group in history. The five members of Hey! Say! 7 were joined by Johnny's Jrs Kota Yabu, Kei Inoo, Hikaru Yaotome, Keito Okamoto and Ryutaro Morimoto, and the ten-member group was split into two subgroups of five based on age.[1] It was also announced that they would make their CD debut on November 14, 2007 with "Ultra Music Power", which was used as Japan's Volleyball World Cup Relay 2007 theme song.[4][5]

On December 22, 2007, Hey! Say! JUMP held their debut concert "Hey! Say! JUMP Debut & First Concert Ikinari! in Tokyo Dome". They became the youngest group ever to perform in Tokyo Dome with the average age of 15.7 years old.[6]

2008: Members Acting Activities

On April 30, they released their first ever concert DVD Hey! Say! JUMP Debut & First Concert Ikinari! in Tokyo Dome. The group released their second single Dreams Come True on May 21, which topped the Oricon Chart.[7] In July 2008 it was announced that the group's third new single "Your Seed" would be used as the image song for Japanese release of the animated film Kung-Fu Panda.[8] In October 2008, the group released their fourth single "Mayonaka no Shadow Boy", which was used as the theme song for the drama Scrap Teacher starring members Yamada, Nakajima, Arioka and Chinen.[9]

At the end of the year, they held their first national tour, Hey! Say! Jump-ing Tour '08-'09.

2009-2010: JUMP No. 1

After the full group's tour, Hey! Say! 7 had their first concert series as a sub unit called Hey! Say! 7 spring concert 09 MONKEY and the whole group embarked on another tour afterwards entitled Hey! Say! JUMP CONCERT TOUR Spring '09. They released their second DVD Concert Hey! Say! Jump-ing Tour '08-'09 on April 29, 2009. That same month, the group's variety show Jikuukan Sedai Batoru Shōwa x Heisei Sho wa Hey! Say! began its broadcast with members Yamada, Nakajima and Morimoto. On June 7, it was announced that Ryosuke Yamada and Yuri Chinen would be part of the Johnny's unit NYC Boys.

At the end of July 2009 the group started another tour that ended with their Hey! Say! JUMP TENGOKU DOME concert in the Tokyo Dome. Total concert attendance reached one million people and an official fan club was announced. In October, another variety show, Shuumatsu YY Jumping, began airing. The group ended the year with another concert series, Hey! Say! JUMP WINTER CONCERT 09-10.

On February 24, 2010, the group released their fifth single "Hitomi no Screen" after a year and a half of touring, which topped the Oricon weekly single charts with 202,000 copies.[10] Hey! Say! JUMP released their first album titled Jump No. 1 on July 7, 2010. On December 15, 2010, the group released a new single with the name of "Arigatō (Sekai no Doko ni Ite mo)". It reached number one on the Oricon singles chart and sold 64,206 albums on its first day.

2011: Yan Yan JUMP, Morimoto's Suspension and The Smurfs

Hey! Say! JUMP and other Johnny's Juniors are currently starring in a new variety show called Yan Yan JUMP. The show started on April 16, 2011. It begins at 6:30 JST every Saturday. The name and theme of the show is based on Yan Yan Utau Studio, a program that aired roughly 20 years previously, featuring some of the senior Johnny's members.[11]

The group was surrounded by much controversy on June 28, 2011 after the photos of Morimoto smoking underage were leaked onto the Internet.[12] The following day, in response to the scandal, Johnny's Entertainment issued a statement of apology and planned to suspend Morimoto from all of his activities indefinitely.[13] Following the removal of Morimoto's profile from the official Johnny & Associates website, Johnny Kitagawa himself made an official announcement on the issue. He stated that Morimoto now has ambitions to focus on studying and denied any possibility of him returning soon.[14]

On June 29, 2011, the group released a new single with the name of "Over". It peaked at number one on the Oricon singles chart on its first day with 113,554 sales. This has made it Hey! Say! JUMP's highest selling single since 'Ultra Music Power' as their debut song back in 2007.

On September 21, 2011, they released their eighth single, "Magic Power".[15] This was their first solo without Morimoto, due to the aforementioned smoking scandal and suspension. "Magic Power" was used as the theme for the Japanese dub of the 3D movie "The Smurfs", in which members Ryosuke Yamada and Yuri Chinen provided the voices for Clumsy Smurf and Brainy Smurf respectively.

Hikaru Yaotome was cast in Ikemen Desu Ne, alongside fellow Johnny's idol from Kiss-My-Ft2, Tamamori Yuta and Fujigaya Taisuke.

2012: International Activities: Asia Tour and "Jump World"

It was reported that Morimoto will no longer take part on any Hey! Say! JUMP's activity as he wants to focus on his studies.[16]

The group held their first Asian tour from March to June, with a series of concerts in Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan.[17][18] It was also announced that they will be releasing their first single of the year and ninth in all, on February 22, titled "Super Delicate".[19] The single was a theme song for Risou no Musuko, in which Ryosuke Yamada star in it alongside Yuto Nakajima.

On March 15, it was announced that Hong Kong leg tour would be postponed until May and that the Bangkok tour was cancelled respectively due to unknown reason.[20][21][22] On the 22nd, it was announced that a new musical called Johnny's World will be produced and directed by Johnny Kitagawa which would start its run at the Imperial Garden Theater during the months of November through December. Hey! Say! JUMP would be the main cast while 100 others would be making an appearance including Kis-My-Ft2, Sexy Zone, A.B.C-Z and Johnny's Jr.. Kamenashi Kazuya, Takizawa Hideaki and Domoto Koichi will be making guest appearance as well.[23]

On April 25, almost two years since the released of their first album Jump No. 1, the group announced that they will released their second album on June 6. The album is called Jump World and it contained their singles from "Arigatō (Sekai no Doko ni Ite mo)" onwards.[24]

Hey! Say! JUMP kicked off their first Asian tour at the Yokohama Arena on 3 May.[25]

At the end of 2012, it was announced that Ryosuke Yamada will be making his solo debut with the single "Mystery Virgin" on January 9, 2013. The song was first solicited to mainstream radio on November 30, 2012 and was available for digital download on December 26, 2012.

2013-2014: Continued Success

Ryosuke Yamada made his solo debut with the single Mystery Virgin in January 2013. The debut single serves as the drama theme song for the live action adaptation drama of Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo: Hong Kong Kowloon Treasure Murder Case. Ryosuke Yamada was cast as the 4th generation who portrays the famous hero of the series, Hajime Kindaichi. The drama was aired overseas, features famous cast members from Korea and Taiwan, including Wu Chun, Seungri of Big Bang, and Vivian Hsu. The single and the drama had brought Ryosuke Yamada to major fame, which leads to the increase popularity of Hey! Say! JUMP.

On March 3, 2013 JUMP had their first Fan Meeting Event in Thailand. They also held another nationwide tour, Hey! Say! JUMP Zenkoku e JUMP Tour 2013, from April to August. Both of the singles they released in 2013, Come on a My House and Ride with Me, went number on the Oricon chart. Ride with Me was the theme song of the 2014 sequel of Ryosuke Yamada's Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo: Gokumon Juku Satsujin Jiken.

The group has continued releasing singles in 2014 and their third album smart went number one the week it was released. The members have also continued to be active in variety, and Hikaru Yaotome and Daiki Arioka are now regulars on the show Hirunandesu!.

In January 2014, Hikaru Yaotome had his first drama lead role in Dark System Koi no Ouza Ketteisen, alongside fellow member Kei Inoo as a supporting cast member. The group released the single AinoArika, which serves as the drama's soundtrack. The single topped the oricon chart.

It was announced that Yamada Ryosuke will portray Hajime Kindaichi again in the drama series of Kindaichi called Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo Neo, alongside a fellow member, Daiki Arioka who portrayed Saki Ryuji (Kindaichi's junior) in the drama. During the same season, Yuto Nakajima had his first drama lead in Suikyuu Yankees, in which Takaki Yuya was also cast in. The group released a double A side single called Weekender/Asu e no Yell, which serves as the theme song for both Yamada's and Nakajima's drama. The single topped the oricon chart.

Yuri Chinen was cast as one of the students in the drama series adaptation of Jigoku Sensei Nube, while Kei Inoo was cast in Takatau! Shouten Girl, Keito Okamoto in the second season of First Class, and Hikaru Yaotome was cast in Do-S Deka. In 2014, all members of Hey! Say! JUMP made an appearance in a drama series.

2015: Chau#, 24 Hour Television, JUMPing Car, JUMPing Carnival, Kimi Attraction, Movies and Dramas

In 2015, the group had their first TV show, called Itadaki High JUMP. The group also hosts another TV show, called Little Tokyo Life alongside another Johnny's band, Johnny's West.[citation needed]

In March, Ryosuke Yamada made his movie debut as the hero, Shiota Nagisa, of the live action movie adaptation of the manga, Assassination Classroom. The movie topped the box office of Japan on its first opening week.[citation needed] Hey! Say! JUMP released a single that serves as the soundtrack of the movie, called "Koro-Sensations". The single topped the Oricon chart.[citation needed]

Ryosuke Yamada was cast in another movie, called Grasshopper, along with Ikuta Toma, released in November. Yamada was nominated as best new artist in 2015's Hochi Film Awards for both his portrayal in Assassination Classroom and Grasshopper.[citation needed]

Daiki Arioka starred in a TV drama called Okitegami Kyoko no Biboroku, as Narikawa Nuru.[citation needed]
