Ibanda District is a district in Western Uganda. As is the case with most Ugandan districts, it is named after its 'chief town' of Ibanda, where the district headquarters are located.

Location
Ibanda District is bordered by Kamwenge District to the west and north, Kiruhura District to the east, Mbarara District and Buhweju District to the south, and Rubirizi District to the southwest.[1] The district headquarters at Ibanda are located approximately 70 kilometres (43 mi), by road, northwest of Mbarara, the largest city in the sub-region.[2] The coordinates of the district are:00 07S, 30 30E.
Overview
Ibanda District was created on 1 July 2005, by elevating Ibanda County, formerly part of Mbarara District, to full district status. It consists of the sub-counties of: 1. Nyabuhikye 2. Bisheshe 3. Kichenche 4. Rukiri 5. Nyamarebe 6. Ishongorero, 7. Ibanda Town Council and 8. Igorora Town Council. The district covers 964.8 square kilometres (372.5 sq mi) and averages an elevation of approximately 1,800 metres (5,900 ft) above sea level. The annual rainfall in the district averages 1,100 millimetres (43 in).
Ibanda, the seat of the district headquarters, is connected to the National Electricity Grid with a sub-station 4 miles (6.4 km) outside Mbarara town. A tarmac road connects via Mbarara to the capital Kampala.
There is one major hospital, Ibanda Hospital, administered by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mbarara. The hospital has an affiliated school for enrolled midwives and nurses.
Population
In 1991, the national population census estimated the district population at approximately 148,000. The 2002 national census estimated the population of Ibanda District at about 198,700. The population of the district has a calculated annual growth rate of 2.6%. It is estimated that the population of Ibanda District in 2012 was about 255,500.[3] The able below illustrates the population growth in the district, between 2002 and 2012. Economic activities
As with most Ugandan districts, agriculture forms the backbone of the economy of Ibanda District. Most of the agriculture is on the subsistence level. The largest farm in the district is the Kiburara Prison Farm, located at Kiburara Prison. The crops grown in the district include the following:[4]

Livestock is kept in many areas of the district including cattle, goats, sheep and poultry.
Prominent people
Prominent people from the district include the following:
- Patrick Bitature, businessman, entrepreneur and industrialist. He is one of the wealthiest people in Uganda. Current Chairman of Umeme.
- Serapio Karashani is also very prominent in Ibanda district, he served as one of the most diligent government workers between 1986 ans 2006, he is currently retired
