Ice District

Ice District is a $2.5 billion mixed-use sports and entertainment district being developed on 10 hectares (25 acres; 120,000 sq yd) of land in Downtown, Edmonton, Alberta. When completed it will be Canada’s largest mixed use and entertainment district.[1][2] The developers of the district are the Katz Group[3] and the WAM Development Group.[4][5] On 13 July 2015, it was announced that the area of the city surrounding the arena from 101 and 104 Street to 103 and 106 Avenue would be referred to as "Ice District" - a name created by Daryl Katz.[6][7]

Landmarks & attractions

Rogers Place

Rogers Place, the future home arena for the Edmonton Oilers of the NHL, will be the main attraction of the district. Opening in 2016, it will seat 18,500 people for hockey games.[8] The cost of the arena is expected to be $480 million.[9]

Winter garden

The winter garden, a 4,200-square-metre (45,000 sq ft), climate-controlled facility, will span 104 Avenue. It will be a public gathering space and will connect the LRT with the grand entrance of Rogers Place. There will also be a pedway connection to the new JW Marriott hotel. It is expected to open in September 2016 at a cost of $56.5 million.[10]

Public plaza

There will be a 4,600-square-metre (50,000 sq ft) public plaza.[11]

Community arena

The Edmonton Downtown Community Arena will be the home arena of the MacEwan University Griffins hockey teams, and will host practices for the Oilers and the Edmonton Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League. It will have a seating capacity of 1000.[12]

Grand Villa Edmonton Casino

Currently known as the Baccarat Casino, it will be moving in summer of 2016 into a new 11,600-square-metre (125,000 sq ft) facility next to Rogers Place.[13]

Cineplex theatre

Located on 103 Street between 103 Avenue and 104 Avenue, it will have two large format screens and five licensed VIP screens. There will also be a lounge.[14]

Public transportation

Pedways

The Edmonton Pedway will be expand with additions to The City of Edmonton tower, Stantec Tower, hotel, and arena, linking them to the existing system by above surface, and underground pedways.[15][16]

Parking Facilities

With the new development ~4,000 new parking spaces will be created.[17] As well their will be 5,000-10,000 within 5-10 minute walk from the arena and public plaza.[18] Major roads include 104 Avenue, 101 Street, and 105 Street.

Edmonton Transit System & Edmonton Light Rail Transit

The districts main public transportation will be handled through the Edmonton Transit System and Edmonton Light Rail Transit.[19] The main LRT station will be the MacEwan Station, located just north of Rogers Place.[20] With the pedway system additions, four LRT stations will have direct access. This includes the MacEwan Station, Bay/Enterprise Station, Central Station, and Churchill Station. As well connecting and expanding the ETS bus routes that will serve all throughout the district.[19][21]

Office and residential towers

Two new office buildings will be built in the district and a hotel with private residences above. The City of Edmonton Tower; with 29 floors, and at a height of 129.8 m (426 ft). Is Expected to be opened in fall 2016, with construction coming to an end in 2017.[22][23] The Stantec Tower; with 66/67 floors at a height of 250.8 m (823 ft).[24][25] As well as the combined JW Marriott Edmonton Ice District & Residences[26] with 55 floors at a height of 192.15 m (630.4 ft),[27] expected to be completed in late 2018.[28]

Stantec Tower

The Stantec Tower, the new headquarters of Stantec, will be the tallest building in Edmonton, and the tallest building west of Toronto at a height of 250.8 m (823 ft).[24][29][24] Thirty-three storeys will be for residential units.[30][24]

The City of Edmonton Tower[23][31] It is expected to open in fall of 2016 and most of the cities staff will be moved into the tower when opened, with construction coming to an end in 2017.[22][32] The tower was topped-out in early spring 2016.

JW Marriott Edmonton & Residences

The 356-room JW Marriott, Hotel expected completion in 2018, located between the 1st and 22 floors of the tower.[26] It will have 2,300 square metres (25,000 sq ft) for conference halls and a 930 square metres (10,000 sq ft) ballroom.[33] This will be the third hotel of this brand in Canada.[28]

Legends Private Residences

Located from the 23rd and the 54th floors will be the Legends Private Residences; luxurious condominium.[26][34] Located above the hotel [26]
