Giacomo Lopresti[2] (born 23 August 1969) is a British Conservative Party politician. In the 2010 general election he was first elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Filton and Bradley Stoke, a constituency newly created by changes made by the Boundary Commission for England.[3]

Early career

On leaving school, Lopresti worked in his family ice cream business for over ten years. After 1997, he worked as an estate agent and mortgage broker before working for the Conservative Party as a Regional Development Officer and in the Conservative Party Treasurer’s Department .

Military

He has also served in the Territorial Army in the 266 Battery, Royal Artillery as a gunner, serving with the 29 Commando for a year, which culminated in a 5-month tour in Afghanistan.[4] From 2011 to 2013, Lopresti served as a trooper in the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars, an army reserve cavalry unit. Prior to that, Lopresti was a gunner with 266 Commando Battery, which is based in Whiteladies Road. During that time, Lopresti served, as a mobilised reservist, with 29 Commando RA for a year and was deployed in Helmand Province, in Afghanistan, on Operation Herrick 9 for 5 months over Christmas and New Year 2008/9. Whilst in Afghanistan, Lopresti ran the Camp Bastion Half Marathon, for Help the Heroes, on New Years Day 2009.[5]

Politics

Lopresti previously represented the Stockwood Ward on Bristol City Council from 1999 to 2007. He also stood unsuccessfully for the Bristol East constituency in 2001, and for the South West at the European Parliament elections in 2004.

Lopresti was a member of the A-List.[6] and is the son-in-law of Lord Cope of Berkeley who was the Member of Parliament for Northavon from 1983-1997 and Paymaster General in John Major's government.[7]

In 2011, he was a member of the special Select Committee set up to scrutinise the Bill that became the Armed Forces Act 2011.[8] He also served on the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee[9]

Lopresti is a member of the Conservative Friends of Israel group,[10] and has attended delegations of that group [11] including during the Operation Defensive Shield conflict when he visited for an Israeli military briefing on the Iron Dome defence system.[12]

In 2012 Lopresti was named by Conservative Home as one of a minority of loyal Conservative backbench MPs not to have voted against the government in any significant rebellions.[13]

In the 2015 UK general election, he retained his seat with an increased majority of almost 10,000.[14]

Personal life

Lopresti is separated from Lucy, the daughter of Lord Cope of Berkeley. They have three children.

In 2015 Lopresti started a relationship with fellow MP Andrea Jenkyns.[7]

Lopresti has openly been a Freemason since about 2003.[15][16]

Lopresti was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2013. He has received treatment at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.[17]
