Jaime de Amorim Sieuve de Séguier (26 June 1860 – 7 June 1932) was a Portuguese writer, journalist and lexicographer.

Biography

Jaime de Séguier was born in Barcelos, Portugal, the son of Carlos da Silva de Séguier and Maria Casimira de Amorim Soares de Séguier.

In Lisbon, he collaborated in newspapers and magazines such as Jornal da Noite and Diário de Notícias as well as in the weekly Jornal do Domingo (1881–1883),[1] in Renascença (1878–1879?),[2] and in O Pantheon (1880–1881).[3] He also collaborated in the Jornal do Commercio. As a writer he published, among other works, Alegros e Adágios (1883), a collection of poetry.

He was the author of the Dicionário Prático Ilustrado (Illustrated Practical Dictionary—New Luso-Brazilian Encyclopedic Dictionary, full title in the original spelling), published in 1910 both in Portugal and Brazil. Jaime de Séguier adopts in the first edition an orthography (and accentuation) in line with many of the rules that would be adopted in the Orthographic Reform of 1911. The work, sometimes considered an unofficial translation of the French Larousse dictionary, had second and third editions in 1930 and 1946 and is the origin of the Dicionário Lello Prático Ilustrado, updated and expanded by José Lello and Edgar Lello, whose first edition is from 1952 and which, in 2009, was acquired by Priberam, serving as the basis for the Priberam Dictionary of the Portuguese Language.[4]
