Joan Bybee

Joan Lea Bybee (Hooper; born 11 February 1945 New Orleans, LA[1]) is an American linguist. She is a Distinguished Professor at the University of New Mexico. She served as president of the Linguistic Society of America in 2004.[2] Much of her work concerns grammaticalisation, stochastics, modality, phonology and morphology. She is married (Austin, Texas on 19 June 1965) to William Thomas Hooper III (born 31 August 1944).[3]

Bybee has a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at Austin, a master's degree from San Diego State University and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles.
