John Boyd (diplomat)
Sir John Dixon Ikle Boyd KCMG (born 17 January 1936) was the master of Churchill College, Cambridge from 1996 to 2006. He has also been the British ambassador to Japan, between 1992 and 1996.
Along with Lynda Chalker, Baroness Chalker of Wallasey, who was then the UK's Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and Minister for Overseas Development, Sir John assisted the British delegation which participated in the first Tokyo International Conference on African Development in October 1993.[1]
Sir John has several high-profile positions, including chairman of Asia House, has served as chairman of the British Museum and a non-executive director for British Nuclear Fuels plc (BNFL) between 1997 and 2000. He served as chairman of trustees for the Cambridge Union Society until his retirement as master of Churchill College.
Japan connection
He retains a strong interest in Japan, and wrote the introduction to Japanese Students at Cambridge University in the Meiji Era, 1868–1912: Pioneers for the Modernization of Japan [1], by Noboru Koyama, translated by Ian Ruxton, (Lulu Press, September 2004, ISBN 1-4116-1256-6).
