Joseph Bautz

Joseph Bautz (sometimes Josef; 20 November 1843 – 19 March 1917) was a German Roman Catholic priest and theologian.

Biography

Joseph Bautz was born in Keeken, near Kleve. After graduating from the Collegium Augustinianum Gaesdonck, he studied philosophy and theology at the Royal Theological and Philosophical Academy (now University of Münster) from 1863 to 1867, under Anton Berlage. On 20 December 1867 Bautz was ordained priest. In 1874 he worked as a prefect at the Collegium Ludgerianum in Münster until his habilitation in 1877. He then teach as a private lecturer at the theological faculty in Münster and in 1892 was appointed associate professor of dogmatics and apologetics, succeeding his teacher Berlage. In the same year his faculty awarded him a doctorate in theology. Bautz taught for 36 years at the University of Münster.

He died on 19 March 1917 in Münster; his grave can be found on the central cemetery there.
