The Journal of Evolutionary Biology is a bimonthly peer-reviewed scientific journal covering the field of evolutionary biology. It is published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the European Society for Evolutionary Biology. The founding editor-in-chief was Stephen C. Stearns.[1] He was succeeded by Pierre-Henri Gouyon (1992–1995), Rolf Hoekstra (1996–1999), Peter van Tienderen (2000–2003), Juha Merilä (2004–2007) and Allen Moore (2007–?).[2] The current editor is Michael G? Ritchie (University of St Andrews).

Initially published by Birkhäuser, the journal switched to Blackwell Science in 1998. According to Stearns, this "happened because Birkhäuser, which had been acquired by Springer-Verlag, withheld information on its costs and profits. Revenue was not being shared as we thought we had agreed, and we had poor market penetration in North American and the UK. The change to Blackwell Science brought with it many more library subscriptions and a dramatic increase in revenue to the Society."[2]
